As a youngster, growing up in New York's Upstate region, Burrell became passionate about food and cooking. The Culinary Institute of America is where she went following her graduation with an English degree as well as a communications certificate at Canisius College Buffalo NY. She states "I enjoyed being a Culinary Institute of America student. I was awed by every moment." It was impossible to take enough out of the experience. Following graduation, Burrell worked at La Bottega del 30 in Tuscany and La Taverna del Lupo (in Umbria) during her time at an Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners. She gained a deeper understanding of Italian culture and cuisine during her stay in Italy that has informed her style of cooking.
